Goodwill Message on Strengthening the Role of Religious and Traditional Rulers for National Cohesion

Attendees seated before the stage at the 2026 National Social Cohesion Dialogue and unveiling of the Nigeria Social Cohesion Survey Report.

Trade, Maritime and Customs Consultant and retired Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs, DCG Dera A. Nnadi, mni (Rtd), delivered this goodwill message at a gathering focused on strengthening the contributions of religious and traditional leaders to national unity, peaceful coexistence, and social harmony in Nigeria.

Goodwill Message

Distinguished Religious Leaders, Esteemed Traditional Rulers, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is with great pleasure that I extend my goodwill and warm greetings to all participants at this important gathering dedicated to discussing the theme, “Strengthening the Role of Religious and Traditional Rulers for National Cohesion.”

As a retired senior officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, I had the privilege of serving our nation and witnessing firsthand the diverse cultural, ethnic, and religious landscape that makes Nigeria unique.

Through my years of public service, I came to appreciate that national unity and security are not sustained by government institutions alone. They are also strengthened by the invaluable contributions of religious and traditional leaders, who serve as the moral compass and custodians of our communities.

Religious and traditional rulers occupy a strategic position in society. Their influence extends beyond their immediate constituencies to shaping values, promoting peaceful coexistence, resolving conflicts, and fostering mutual understanding among our people.

At a time when our nation faces challenges that test our collective resolve, their role in promoting dialogue, tolerance, patriotism, and social harmony has become increasingly indispensable.

National cohesion is the foundation upon which sustainable development, peace, and prosperity are built.

It is therefore imperative that we continue to empower and support our religious and traditional institutions as partners in nation-building. Their wisdom, experience, and close connection with the grassroots make them critical stakeholders in strengthening unity and reinforcing the bonds that hold our nation together.

I commend the organisers of this event for bringing together distinguished voices to deliberate on this timely and significant subject.

I am confident that the insights and recommendations arising from these discussions will contribute meaningfully to the promotion of national integration and peaceful coexistence in our country.

As we engage in these deliberations, may we be guided by a shared commitment to the unity, progress, and stability of our nation.

Let us continue to work together to build a society where diversity is celebrated, justice is upheld, and every citizen has a sense of belonging.

I wish you fruitful discussions and a successful event.

Thank you, and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
